The Messy Bits
I talk a lot about pain and discomfort and the messy bits.
I talk a lot about the nervous system in particular The Vagus Nerve and how we have the opportunity to explore different nervous system tones.
When it comes to pain this usually has us on high alert, our posture changes, maybe we can’t sleep like we need to, we can’t be bothered eating what we know is good for us, we search up our symptoms in the hope of finding a way or in some cases 5 easy ways to get through the messy bits.
Pain is messy, that’s for sure. It’s unpredictable and it feels like it’s out to get us or stop us.
We can’t do our normal training and exercise and we could possibly end up braking at people instead of talking to them.
Yes! Messy indeed!
I think one of the best ways through the messy bits is honesty. Calling it what it is.
Now I’m all for positivity and I’m also all in when it comes to honesty, so somewhere between positivity and honesty we may be able to come up with a strategy to point us in the right direction that can help us firstly reduce our pain and secondly regulate our nervous system so we don’t feel so hyper alert but feel more regulated and maybe even a bit calm.
Being a Masseuse, I treat clients using a range of massage techniques. I also ask this very important question How’s the body feeling?
It’s a big question!
And sometimes the answer is Its sore in my lower back, my neck hurts, I’m just tired, I’m annoyed and sometimes the answer is It’s just messy.
I rate all of these answers because they are honest and they give me a very clear picture on how my client is feeling, then we can talk about what they need and I can let them know what I can do to help.
The time in between sustaining an injury and being in pain and the time when you are feeling a lot better I think is so difficult but calling things what they are, being honest about how your body is feeling is a good first step out of the messy bits of recovery.
Be healthy. Stay healthy.
